Scenes from a Dhaka inferno

The toll from a horrific fire that engulfed the Green Cozy Cottage Shopping Mall in Dhaka rose to 46 dead as of late Friday, with at least 22 more people critically injured from the blaze, officials said.

The cause of the fire, which broke out in a first-floor restaurant and spread quickly to the upper floors of the building, had yet to be established.

But fire safety officials said the building had no fire exits and gas cylinders at the top of its lone stairwell had blocked the evacuation path.
